Frills and ruffles are making its way back this Spring/Summer. First spotted on the runway by the likes of Michael Kors and Mulberry, it is currently a key trend in the high street shops. If done well, subtle ruffles and frills give the perfect feminine touch to any outfit. I've collected quite a few pieces with delicate ruffle detailing on the sleeves and skirts over the past few months, but this skirt has definitely become one of my favourites. What makes it better is that this skirt is totally affordable and gives off a great pop of colour for the summer. I love incorporating colour into my outfits at this time of year as it is always good to spice up those monochrome outfits that I usually wear all day everyyy day.
This skirt is perfect for a summer city break as the lightweight material is great for hot weather and the vibrant colour combined with the ruffles gives me serious Spanish vibes! (Red dress girl emjoi for sure). I paired this skirt with an off the shoulder black top with some frill detailing on the hem and a western black belt to tie the look together. An advice for a city break would be to definitely pack comfy shoes, as I had to swap my original choice with a pair of flip flops because comfort over anything... duh!
My top tips when styling with ruffle and frills:
1. Keep the other clothing items simple. You want it to be the key piece so over doing it with other statement pieces is a no-no!
2. For everyday wear, I am drawn more to items that have a subtle ruffle/ frill oppose to a full 100 layer ruffle on the sleeves. (Although the Balenciaga ruffle dress in the Victoria and Albert musuem is goals). This just makes it more wearable and casual!
3. Wrap it with a belt! I love my western belt- I literally wear it with everything. This just ties the look together and I always feel if a outfit looks like it is missing something, a belt can complete the look.
